About the Studio

A small Asheville workshop of furniture makers and millwrights, building heirloom pieces by hand from solid wood.

Furniture should outlive the people who buy it.

Heartwood started in a leaky garage with a single hand plane and a stubborn belief: that a piece of furniture should be something you keep, repair, and hand down — not something you replace every few years. Two decades later, that belief still runs the shop.

We work in solid hardwood, never veneer over particleboard. Joints are cut to fit — mortise and tenon, dovetail, draw-bored — so a Heartwood piece can be taken apart and put back together a century from now. Every surface is finished by hand, because a machine can't feel when the wood is ready.

What we believe

Good furniture is honest about what it's made of, built to be used hard, and beautiful enough that you'd never want to. Our job is to listen closely, choose the right wood, and do the slow, careful work that makes a piece last.
